Silver Wear: Tines to Treasures

The long process from flatware to wearable art begins. . . usually at the flea market! I spend many hours scouring the local markets and antique malls for interesting old silverplate, and sometimes sterling, silverware patterns. After acquiring my treasures I head home to begin to the transformation.

My initial concern is to remove the years of tarnish; this can be quite a long process. I’ve tried many methods but I usually seem to end up covered in blue silverware polish and black dust residue flung toward me by my trusty Dremel. After the silver is sparkling again, I heat it up so that it is soft enough for bending. I use many different types of pliers, a vise, some common plumbing implements and lots of (pink and purple!) duct tape to create each piece. Each object is unique and is created by hand and each piece of silverware seems to be suited for a special purpose. Occasionally flatware will break, but I can usually salvage the remaining pieces and transform them into something too.

The process concludes with more polishing and usually a scrub with a toothbrush for good measure. After each piece is sparkling, I attach the appropriate jewels or add hand-beaded necklace chains. I think the transformation is amazing and I hope you do, too.
